Integrated Trail System (ITS)

The Integrated Trail System (ITS) in Maine is a world-class network of over 4,000 miles of interconnected trails, serving as the “gateway” to the state’s vast and rugged backcountry. This legendary system is the result of a massive cooperative effort between the Maine Snowmobile Association (MSA), the Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands, and thousands of generous private landowners who provide access to their property.

While navigating this extensive wilderness network, you can experience:

  • Seamless Statewide Travel: The ITS is designed to allow riders to travel from the southern border all the way to Aroostook County and beyond. The primary routes (marked in red on official maps) are supported by over 10,000 miles of local connector trails (marked in green), making it possible to visit remote villages, scenic overlooks, and local businesses without ever leaving the trail.

  • The Heart of the Maine Highlands: In the Moosehead Lake region, the ITS provides critical access to Rockwood and Greenville. Riders can utilize ITS-66 to explore the shoreline of the lake or connect to ITS-88 and ITS-89 to venture toward the Western Mountains or the 100-Mile Wilderness.

  • Four-Season Multi-Use Rails: Many sections of the ITS utilize historic rail corridors, such as the Four Seasons Adventure Trail and the St. John Valley Heritage Trail. These multi-use paths often transition from snowmobile use in the winter to ATVing, cycling, and hiking in the warmer months.

  • World-Class Trail Maintenance: The system is meticulously maintained by local snowmobile and ATV clubs. These dedicated volunteers operate heavy-duty groomers to ensure smooth, safe riding conditions, even in the most remote reaches of the North Woods.

  • Essential Rider Resources: To navigate safely, riders are encouraged to use the brand-new MSA Mobile App, which provides real-time GPS location, trail conditions, and points of interest like fuel stations and trailside dining.

Whether you are embarking on a multi-day “saddlebag” tour or a quick afternoon excursion from your Rockwood, ME lodging, the Integrated Trail System offers an unparalleled connection to the wild heart of the Pine Tree State.
