Rising dramatically from the center of a frozen Moosehead Lake, Mount Kineo is a winter fortress accessible only by those willing to trek across the “Arctic tundra” of the lake ice.
This high-energy guided hike is your chance to conquer the 800-foot vertical flint cliffs and stand atop a historic fire tower for the most breathtaking 360-degree views in the Maine Highlands. Whether you’re a seasoned winter mountaineer or an intermediate hiker ready to level up, this is the definitive “bucket list” adventure for March 2025.

-
The Launch Point: Rockwood Town Landing / Kineo Shuttle – 62 Village Road, Rockwood, ME 04478
-
The Challenge: Over 5 miles total trek with a heart-pumping 850 ft elevation gain packed into a single mile.
-
Experience Level: Intermediate to Advanced (Must be comfortable on snowshoes).
-
Dog Friendly: Your four-legged trail buddies are welcome to join the pack!
The Journey: From Ice Trek to Summit Fire Tower
Your adventure begins at the Rockwood Town Landing, where the group will strike out across the frozen expanse of Moosehead Lake. Walking toward the massive rhyolite face of Kineo in the winter is a surreal experience—echoing the footsteps of the Wabanaki people who traveled here for centuries.
Once you hit the peninsula, you’ll dive into snow-laden forests. Be prepared for trail-breaking through deep powder as we ascend toward the peak. The crown jewel of the hike is the Mount Kineo Fire Tower, a 64-foot steel sentinel that offers a panoramic sweep of the 100-Mile Wilderness, Big Moose Mountain, and the shimmering white plains of Maine’s largest lake.
Essential Gear List: Don’t Leave Home Without It!
To ensure a safe and successful summit, you’ll need the right tools:
-
Snowshoes (Mandatory): Must be in excellent condition for traction on steep, icy inclines.
-
Hiking Poles: Highly recommended for stability during the 850-ft ascent.
-
The Layering System: Winter in Rockwood is no joke. Wear moisture-wicking base layers and a windproof outer shell.
-
Fuel & Hydration: Pack high-calorie snacks and water (Pro-tip: Store your water bottle upside down in your pack so the cap doesn’t freeze!).
-
Camera: You’ll want evidence of these epic views!
Post-Hike Party & Community
The adventure doesn’t end at the trailhead. After we descend, join the crew for an optional post-hike dinner in either Rockwood or Greenville. It’s the perfect time to swap stories, share photos, and warm up with a hearty Maine meal after a day of elite exploration.
