Jackman, Maine, known as the “Switzerland of Maine,” serves as a premier northern “gateway” to the vast wilderness of the Long Falls Dam region and the Canadian border. Situated along the Old Canada Road National Scenic Byway (Route 201), this historic town is a sanctuary for those seeking a deep connection to the North Woods and the rugged heritage of the Moose River Valley.
While exploring this storied border outpost, you can experience:
World-Class Snowmobiling & ATVing: Jackman is a central hub for the Integrated Trail System (ITS). Riders can access hundreds of miles of meticulously groomed trails that connect to the Moosehead Lake region and beyond, offering some of the most consistent snow conditions in New England.
The Moose River Bow Trip: Embark on one of Maine’s most famous paddling adventures. This 34-mile loop takes canoeists and kayakers through a stunning chain of lakes and rivers, providing a serene environment for wildlife observation and remote camping.
Premier Hunting & Fishing: Surrounded by over 250,000 acres of forest land, Jackman is a legendary destination for tracking white-tailed deer and moose. The local waters, including Attean Pond and Big Wood Lake, offer exceptional opportunities for landlocked salmon and native brook trout.
Old Canada Road History: Discover the path once traveled by Benedict Arnold on his 1775 expedition to Quebec. The town’s history is deeply rooted in the timber industry and international trade, which is still reflected in the welcoming, hardworking spirit of the local community.
Scenic Overlooks: Visit the Attean Landing for one of the most photographed vistas in the state. From this vantage point, you can look out over the “Moosehead of the West,” where the mountains meet the water in a dramatic display of natural splendor.
Whether you are here for a high-octane trail ride or the quiet solitude of a lakeside retreat, Jackman offers an authentic and restorative escape into the heart of the Maine wilderness.
