Step Into the Story: Opening Day at the Moosehead Cultural Heritage Center

Discover the Heartbeat of the North Woods at Greenville’s Premier History Hub

The Moosehead Cultural Heritage Center—affectionately known as the “Community House”—is officially open for the season! It is located at 6 Lakeview Street in the heart of downtown Greenville. This landmark stands directly across from the shimmering waters of Moosehead Lake. For over a century, this building has been the cornerstone of regional culture. Today it invites you to explore the legends, tragedies, and triumphs that shaped Maine’s rugged interior.

Preserving a Century of Community

Originally built in 1904 as the Universalist Chapel, the Community House has lived many lives. These range from a versatile social hub hosted by the Ready Workers Society to its current role as a world-class museum. Thanks to the Moosehead Historical Society’s ambitious 20-year restoration, the building now features a stunning 100-person auditorium. In addition, there are expanded research archives and fully accessible museum spaces.

Exhibits You Can’t Miss

Whether you’re a history buff or a curious traveler, our curated exhibits offer an immersive experience into the North Woods legacy:

  • The B-52 Tragedy Exhibition: Honor the bravery of the crew involved in the 1963 Stratofortress crash on Elephant Mountain. This permanent display features rare artifacts, including original news clippings and two recovered ejection seats.

  • Moosehead Aviation Museum: Soar through the history of the “bush pilots” who pioneered air travel in the Maine wilderness.

  • Native American Tool Exhibit: Marvel at one of the largest collections of Native American artifacts in Maine, showcasing the deep indigenous roots of the Wabanaki people.

  • Lumbermen’s Museum: Dive into the dangerous world of timber harvesting, featuring authentic logging gear and vintage machinery from the region’s golden age of forestry.
