Maine Winter Racing 2026: Toboggan Championships, Skijoring Events & High-Speed Fun
Maine’s winter landscape isn’t just for quiet snowshoeing and peaceful ice fishing—it’s a high-octane arena where tradition meets pure adrenaline. If you’ve never seen a team in full costume hurtle down an icy chute on a wooden sled, or witnessed a horse sprinting at 30 mph while towing a skier through an obstacle course, then you haven’t truly experienced a Maine winter.
The Maine Winter Racing 2026 season is shaping up to be legendary. From the coastal cliffs of Camden to the historic tracks in Bangor and Skowhegan, these events are the ultimate anchor for any winter itinerary. Whether you’re a die-hard racing fan or a family looking for a unique weekend escape, this guide covers the must-see spectacles of the season.
🛷 The 35th Annual U.S. National Toboggan Championships
There is only one place in the United States where you can witness an organized wooden toboggan race of this scale: the Camden Snow Bowl.
Location: Camden Snow Bowl, 20 Barnestown Rd, Camden, ME 04843
Dates: February 6–8, 2026
The Spectacle: Imagine a 400-foot-long ice-coated wooden chute with a 70-foot vertical drop. Now imagine teams of two, three, or four people rocketed down that chute, reaching speeds of 40 mph before shooting out onto the frozen surface of Hosmer Pond.
What to Expect:
-
Costume Contests: Many of the 400+ teams compete as much for the best outfit as they do for the fastest time.
-
The Atmosphere: Expect a massive festival vibe with local food vendors, music, and a roaring community spirit.
-
Important Deadlines: If you want to race, the registration deadline is January 26, 2026.
🐎 The Maine Triple Crown: Equine Skijoring 2026
Equine skijoring is the fastest-growing winter sport in New England, and for good reason. It’s a high-energy dance between a horse, a rider, and a skier (or snowboarder) being pulled through a timed course of gates, jumps, and ring grabs.
Maine’s Triple Crown Skijoring Circuit features three premier stops:
1. Skijor Bangor
-
Date: Saturday, January 31, 2026 (10:00 AM – 4:00 PM)
-
Location: Bangor Raceway, Bangor, ME
-
The Vibe: This is the season opener! It features a festival-style crowd, cash prizes, food vendors, and a full bar. It’s high-energy and incredibly spectator-friendly.
-
Admission: $15 (Kids 5 & under are free).
2. Topsham Fair Skijoring
-
Date: Saturday, February 7, 2026
-
Location: Topsham Fairgrounds, Topsham, ME
-
The Vibe: Held the same weekend as the Toboggan Championships, this event brings the heart-pounding action to Midcoast Maine with professional and amateur divisions.
3. Skijor Skowhegan
-
Date: Saturday, February 21, 2026 (Starts at 10:00 AM)
-
Location: Skowhegan State Fairgrounds, Skowhegan, ME
-
The Vibe: The final leg of the Triple Crown takes place during the Somerset SnowFest. It’s a full community celebration with vendors, entertainment, and the crowning of the season’s champions.
