Snow Roller History: Taming the Maine Tundra

The festival takes its name from the legendary horse-drawn snow rollers that played an essential role in New England life in the early 1900s. Before modern plows, towns used these massive spruce and oak rollers—some reaching six feet wide—to pack down snow, creating smooth, hard paths for sleighs and pedestrians.

Local craftsman Walter Sears built Monson’s first recorded roller in 1914. Today, Snowroller Day (first held in 1975) keeps this fascinating legacy alive, allowing visitors to see one of the few remaining machines of its kind in action.
